NASA required a rather extraordinary lubricant for the Shuttle transporter. The product had to provide long-lasting and complete lubrication for a moving set of tracks that carried a 12-million-pound load, the Space Shuttle, and it had to be biodegradable. Production of such an environmentally-sensitive lubricant led to the development of several new products, including a penetrating spray lubricant used for rust prevention and loosening corroded nuts, a cleaner and lubricant for guns and fishing reels, and a concentrate used to reduce engine friction.
